Apollo Cancer Centre Introduces Advancement in Thyroid Care
Apollo Hospitals Cancer Centre - Thyro care

Hyderabad: Apollo Cancer Centre (ACC), Hyderabad, has introduced a groundbreaking advancement in thyroid care by expanding its non-invasive thermal ablation procedures for the treatment of benign and selected malignant thyroid nodules. This innovation provides patients with a safer, scar-free, and efficient alternative to traditional thyroid surgery.
Thyroid nodules, which are small lumps in the thyroid gland, are a common condition affecting 4-7 per cent of the population. While the majority—about 95 per cent—are benign, a small percentage (4-6.5 per cent) can be cancerous. Traditionally, thyroid nodules have been treated through surgery, which involves removing part or all of the thyroid gland. While effective, surgery has its challenges, including the risk of permanent hypothyroidism (a condition requiring lifelong medication), visible surgical scars, and potential complications such as damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which can lead to voice changes.
Now, ACC Hyderabad offers advanced, non-invasive thermal ablation techniques, including Microwave Ablation (MWA) and Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA). These cutting-edge procedures, performed under ultrasound guidance, selectively target and treat thyroid nodules without affecting the surrounding healthy tissue. Many studies have confirmed that these techniques are effective in reducing nodule sizes and compressive symptoms, with good cosmetic results.
Dr Siddhartha Chakravarthy, Consultant, Endocrine & Breast Surgeon, Apollo Cancer Centre, Hyderabad, emphasized the importance of expertise, and said, "Thermal ablation is a game-changer in thyroid care, offering a safe, effective, and minimally invasive alternative to surgery. Unlike traditional surgery, which often leaves visible scars and involves extended recovery with potential risks like nerve damage, this advanced technique prioritises patient comfort, aesthetics, and faster recovery.
Dr Ravindra Babu, Director Medical Services, Apollo Cancer Center, Telangana Region also spoke.
