The untimely passing of 26-year-old Anna Sebastian Perayil, a chartered accountant at EY in Pune, has once again brought attention to the challenge of inadequate work-life balance.

Anna, originally from Kerala, has reportedly succumbed to the stress and excessive workload.

Her mother in a letter alleged that her daughter died due to demanding workloads imposed on new employees, forcing them to work extensive hours even on weekends.

She further said that it was completely unjustifiable.

She described this as a systemic problem within the organisation, underscoring the expectation to meet unreasonable targets in corporate offices.

She further suggested EY to reassess its work culture following her daughter’s death.

A recent study by MediBuddy and CII revealed that 62% of Indian employees experience burnout, which is three times higher than the global average.

The study also revealed that many job seekers are increasingly prioritising employers who provide wellness programs, suggesting employees' preference for better work-life balance.

A healthy work-life balance becomes essential in the modern world for the well-being of employees and the success of businesses.

Continuous work can lead to employee burnout, so companies should prioritise establishing a more balanced work atmosphere to overcome such incidents.
