Xbox to Enable Direct Game Purchases in Android App Next Month
Microsoft is set to enhance its Xbox mobile app for Android, allowing US users to buy and play Xbox games directly on their devices starting next month. This move follows a recent court ruling mandating changes to Google Play’s billing practices, enabling Microsoft to capitalise on new opportunities.
Xbox to Enable Direct Game Purchases in Android App
Microsoft is gearing up to update its Xbox mobile app for Android, enabling users in the US to purchase and play Xbox games directly on their devices next month. This news follows a US court order that forces Google to end its compulsion for Google Play Billing for apps in the Play Store on November 1st.
In a post on X, Xbox president Sarah Bond stated, "The court’s ruling to open up Google’s mobile store in the US will allow more choice and flexibility. Our mission is to allow more players to play on more devices, so we are thrilled to share that starting in November, players will be able to play and purchase Xbox games directly from the Xbox App on Android.”
With the new purchasing capabilities integrated into the Xbox mobile app, Microsoft will have the freedom to sell Xbox games directly on Android devices. The app will also incorporate Xbox Cloud Gaming, allowing users to stream games to their phones immediately after purchase.
It remains unclear why Microsoft hasn’t previously enabled game purchases within its Android app, as other platforms like Steam and the PlayStation Store already allow mobile purchases. While enquiries have been made to Microsoft for clarification on this issue, the company stated that Bond’s announcement is all they have to share at this time.
In addition to this development, Microsoft is also working on a browser-based Xbox mobile store, which was initially slated for launch in July.
