Kannada actress Ranya Rao, step-daughter of the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation's Director General of Police (DGP) Ramachandra Rao was detained in Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on March 3, following her departure on the way to Dubai aboard the Emirates flight.

Officials claimed they had confiscated 14.8 tonnes of gold were taken at the hands of Ranya Rao which is one of the biggest gold seizures in the Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport in recent years. The finance ministry issued an official statement, said it was the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) stopped a person who was trying to transport foreign-origin gold bars valued at Rs12.56 crore.
2. According to the police during the interrogation process, Ranya Rao claimed that her visit in Dubai is for commercial. But, DRI officials allege that she was carrying a large amount of gold destined to be smuggled into India. She is currently in the custody of the judicial system in the midst of an investigation.

"
4. Revenue intelligence officers noticed the same pattern of behavior in her travels, and suspected an association with the smuggling of gold. In a study published by HT investigators, they suspect that Rao might have used her father's influence to evade customs checks.
5. In interrogation, she said she was compelled to sell gold. Ranya Rao arrest in connection with the Customs Act, 1962, and the investigation is in progress in order to discover if she has any connection to a wider smuggling ring.
