In response to Cyclone Fengal intensifying, the Tamil Nadu government has taken precautionary measures by declaring holidays for schools across multiple districts. On Wednesday, schools and colleges in at least 11 districts, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Nagapattinam, were closed due to anticipated heavy rains.

In Chennai and Chengalpattu, the holiday applied only to schools, while districts like Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Thiruvallur, Villupuram, Puducherry, and Karaikal saw a complete shutdown of all educational institutions. This decision followed warnings from the Regional Meteorological Centre, which predicted heavy rains for several Tamil Nadu districts, including Cuddalore, Chennai, and Tiruvallur.

Meteorological forecasts indicated significant rainfall for Wednesday across many regions, with warnings extending into Thursday. Districts such as Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Chennai, along with Ranipet and Tiruvannamalai, remained on high alert for more rain.

What About School Holidays for Thursday?

While some districts preemptively declared holidays, the status for November 29 was less certain. However, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, and Puducherry have already confirmed a holiday for schools. Decisions for other districts were still pending.

Interestingly, despite the declared holidays, most parts of Chennai did not experience rain today, leading to humorous reactions from netizens. One user on X quipped, "What's the surefire way to stop rain in Chennai? Just declare a holiday for schools and colleges."
