Supreme Court Confirms Calcutta HC’s Decision to Cancel Over 25,000 School Appointments in Bengal Due to Fraud

WB SSC Recruitment Case: The Supreme Court Thursday upheld an order by the Calcutta High Court order that abrogated the appointment of 25,753 preceptor’s and Bengal teacher recruitment scam state- run and state- backed seminaries in 2016.

1. The apex court said the selection process of the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) was “vitiated by manipulation and fraud”.

2. The bench said the workers, whose movables have been cancelled, won't have to return their hires and other stipends.

3. The top court ordered the West Bengal government to start a fresh selection process and wrap it up within three months.

4. The court granted relaxation to the impaired workers on philanthropic grounds, and said they would not have to give up their job.

5. The bench listed the hail of West Bengal government’s plea against the high court direction for a CBI disquisition into the case on April 4.

Reading out the judgement, Justice Khanna said campaigners formerly appointed need not hand over the payment paid to them so far. Justice Khanna, still, said nothing after this period of termination and continuing of fresh service will be treated as vacant service.

On April 22, 2024, the Calcutta High Court cancelled the reclamation of 25,753 preceptors and non-teaching staff appointments by SSC, ordering them to return their hires with interest. The court also ordered fresh reclamation against the posts within 15 days. The bench, led by Justice Debangsu Basak, observed that the OMR wastes of Group C, Group D, Classes 9 and 10 were manipulated in 2016, making all the replenishments illegal.
