Subhajit Saha: Meet the GI Man from TG

Hyderabad: Subhajit Saha has been working in the field of Geographical Indications (GIs) and Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) for the past 20 years. He has a master’s in law in IPR with a post-graduate degree in Microbiology.
Subhajit is a registered Patent agent and Trademark Agent with the Indian IP office. He has been instrumental in championing the cause for spreading IPR awareness in the country since 2004 and has facilitated more than 2,000 IPRs in his career.
His passion for GIs is unmatched. Hence, he can be labelled as the GI man of Telangana. He has facilitated more than 30 GIs from the State of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh over the last two decades.
His passion also led him to open an NGO - Intellectual Property Awareness Society (IPRAS) to help GI art and artisans for branding and promotion of GIs. He was invited by the Origin International GI Association in 2013 for a lecture on Indian GIs in Bordeaux, France.
Saha was involved in the launch of the first e-book of GIs from two Telugu States, released in 2020 and 2023 with all the GIs of both the States. His initiatives on # GharGharGI and #Gift a GI Gift a Tradition was appreciated by the then Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundarajan.
He also worked on GI tourism and as pro bono nodal officer on GI for the Telangana government. Recently, he was in the news for the grant of registration for Tandur Red Gram and Hyderabad Lac bangles from the State.
Subhajit also worked in fusion of GIs that gave birth to the Cheriyal Paintings on T-shirts and Pochamaplly Ikkat with Allen Solly to have Allen Solly Ikkat collections. He believes GI is a strong tool for the economic development of India.
He is currently working as the legal head in LCGC Resolute Group. Before this, he was with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 18 years. His continuing passion for GI- enriched with a blend of industry association, academic and corporate roles - helps artisans and arts of two Telugu States.
