At least 12 civilians were injured in a grenade attack in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, on Sunday. The victims were quickly taken to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital (SMHS) for treatment. The explosion occurred in the Sunday market near the Tourist Reception Centre, creating panic among shoppers who rushed for safety.
Dr. Tasneem Showkat, the medical superintendent at SMHS, reported that the injured include eight men and one woman, all of whom are currently in stable condition. Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed to the area to assist with evacuations and to initiate a search for the attackers.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, calling it “deeply disturbing.” He expressed concern over the recent surge of violence in the region, stating, “There can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians. The security apparatus must act decisively to address this wave of attacks so that people can live without fear.”
This attack follows the killing of a top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander in a previous encounter, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region. Inspector General of Police VK Birdi confirmed that a terrorist identified as Usman was killed in Srinagar, with links to a recent murder case and connections to the Pakistani-based Resistance Front.
The previous day saw two other encounters in the valley, marking the first such operation in Srinagar in over two years.
