A sightseeing tour over New York became tragic on Thursday when a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River, killing six individuals — including a high-profile Siemens executive, one of Europe's biggest technology companies.
According to reports from ABC News, Agustín Escobar and his spouse, Merce Camprubi Montal, died in the unfortunate crash accompanied by their three children, aged 4, 5, and 11. The pilot is reported to have lost his life too.
In a company press release, the specific statement is, "He presently heads the Siemens Spain team and is the global head of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility."
Siemens is a multinational corporation headquartered in Germany, which operates across industries such as energy, industry, transport and healthcare technology. Its rail and mobility business segment, where Escobar had a global leadership position; works on projects involving rail systems, infrastructure, and transport technology across different nations.
On his LinkedIn profile, Escobar said he had more than 25 years of experience managing international operations in the US, South America, Germany, and Spain.
Pictures taken at the moment just before takeoff reveal the family smiling and well dressed for the weather, as per the New York Post.
The Bell 206 helicopter departed from Wall Street Heliport right after 3 pm and progressed as far as the George Washington Bridge before events took a disastrous turn. An eyewitness informed the Post that half of the rotor detached in flight. The chopper spun around and crashed in the icy Hudson River waters alongside Pier 40 in Manhattan.
The reason for the crash is still being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.
US President Donald Trump and New York Mayor Eric Adams condoled the victims after the crash.
