The hunger strike by junior physicians protesting the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has reached its 11th day as of Tuesday.
A significant hearing concerning rape and murder is set to occur before a three-judge panel led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, where the matter of the young physicians' protracted hunger strike is expected to be addressed. During the most recent hearing in September, the Supreme Court remarked that the disclosures made by the Central Bureau of Investigation on its inquiry into the rape and murder of the 31-year-old resident doctor were "disturbing."
The day's emphasis will be on two concurrent and opposing carnivals in central Kolkata: the annual Durga idol immersion carnival organised by the West Bengal government and the human chain protest demonstration titled “Droh-Carnival,” organised by representatives of the state's medical community advocating for their demands regarding the issues of rape and murder.
The Kolkata Police had already denied the no-objection for the "Droh-Carnival." The medical representatives have declared their intention to proceed with the planned evening program; thus, the municipal police have enacted prohibitory orders for the day along the path designated for the human-chain protest demonstration.
On Monday evening, another physician involved in the hunger strike rally at Esplanade in central Kolkata was hospitalised after losing consciousness in a nearby lavatory.
Tanaya Panja, admitted on Monday evening, was one of the initial six junior physicians who commenced the hunger strike on the evening of October 5 at Esplanade. She is the fifth junior doctor to be hospitalised due to a decline in medical conditions, following Aniket Mahato from R.G. Kar, Anustup Mukhopadhyay from Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, Plastya Acharya from N.R.S. Medical College & Hospital, and Aloke Verma from North Bengal Medical College & Hospital in Siliguri, Darjeeling district.
