Rs 1.3 Lakh vs Rs 4 Lakh: Engineer Questions the Value of a 'Big Salary'
A Bengaluru-based engineer turned to the internet for advice regarding a job offer he received from Sweden
Reddit Post
A Bengaluru-based engineer took to the internet to seek advice on a job offer from Sweden. In a Reddit post, user @Strict_Thanks4656 shared that he currently earns ₹1,30,000 per month in Bengaluru. However, the offer from Sweden promises a monthly salary of 50,000 SEK (over ₹4 lakhs), representing a substantial increase. Despite this tempting offer, the engineer voiced concerns about the higher cost of living in Sweden and its potential impact on his family life. The post has garnered significant attention online as the engineer grapples with the dilemma of whether to accept a position that could triple his current salary.
In the post, the engineer wrote:
“I am 31, married, with no kids yet, and I work as a mechanical engineer in Bangalore. Currently, I earn ₹1,30,000 (about SEK 16,500) per month after taxes and retirement deductions. After paying rent, sending money to my parents, and covering other living expenses, I'm left with around ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 (SEK 7,340) per month, which mostly goes toward EMIs that I have to pay for another year. I’m satisfied with my job and my future prospects here. The work-life balance is good, and my employer covers health insurance for my wife, kids, and parents, including dental and outpatient care.
Recently, I received a job offer from Sweden for 50,000 SEK per month in Helsingborg. I don’t see myself permanently settling abroad, and my motivation to move is primarily financial—to break free from my current debt cycle and to make some investments. My wife, although qualified, isn't particularly motivated to work. I also have dependent parents in my hometown, and I’m their only child.
I've visited Sweden for short business trips, so I have some understanding of the quality of life and weather, but I lack detailed financial insights. I'm wondering if relocating to Sweden for 4-5 years could improve my situation. Can someone please advise?”
How users reacted to the post
The post garnered numerous comments on Reddit, with users providing various perspectives on the pros and cons of relocating to Sweden for work. The discussion underscores the complex factors individuals must weigh when considering international job opportunities.
"Sweden is not a country where you go to earn high. You can save more if you're single and live frugally. However, you can enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, explore the outdoors, travel, and gain international work experience. Financially, you might save up to half your salary if you live very frugally, but then what's the point?" one user commented.
Another user advised him to thoroughly research the cost of living in Sweden before making a decision, noting, "Resident taxes in Sweden are high, around 50% if you earn more than $50,000 annually. However, it’s a fantastic place to live, with clean air and a high quality of life."
“I would go just for the experience, even if not for the money. But if your wife isn't motivated to work, she might feel quite lonely there. Maybe she could consider volunteering or attending language classes,” suggested another user, highlighting the impact the move might have on his family life.
Meanwhile, a fourth user shared their own experience, stating, “I worked in Sweden for two years starting in 2019, earning SEK 22,000 as a bachelor, and I always regret coming back. The work-life balance is great, people are friendly, the food is excellent, and public transportation is top-notch. I saved around 10,000 SEK easily. The only downside is the nightlife.”
