On 26 November 2008, India witnessed one of its worst terror attacks in history, wherein ten Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists orchestrated a series of attacks in several locations of Mumbai, which includes Taj Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Leopold Cafe, Mumbai Chabad House, Nariman House among many. Close to about 166 people lost their lives and more than 300 people were injured. Today marks the 16th anniversary of the tragic event.

Here’s a look at the list of heroes who displayed immense courage during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks:

Tukaram Omble

Tukaram Omble worked as an Assistant Sub-Inspector in Mumbai Police. He was shot dead at Girgaum Chowpatty in south Mumbai. When terrorist Amir Kasab was on the run Omble made tremendous efforts in catching him. Though being unarmed Omble grabbed Kasab so that other officers could arrest him. However, the effort met with a tragic end as Kasab opened fire on him, leading to the constable's death.

Hemant Karkare

Anti-Terrorist Squad chief Hemant Karkare lost his life along with IPS officer Ashok Kamte, and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar during the November 26 terror attacks. Karkare died of bullet injuries during an anti-terror operation at the Taj Hotel.

Karambir Singh Kang

Karambir Singh Kang served as the General Manager of the Taj Hotel during the 26/11 attacks. During the tragic event, his wife and children lost their lives, but this didn’t deter Karambir as he continued to work day and night by assisting in the rescue operation.

Thomas Varghese

Thomas Varghese served as a senior waiter at Taj's Wasabi restaurant. After hearing shots of gunfire, he helped the guests in sending them to safety. While being the last one to leave the restaurant, terrorists gunned him down in the valley.
