On Monday, Qualcomm announced plans to convert technology initially developed for laptop processors for use in mobile phone chips, intending to increase its capabilities for generative AI applications.

The San Diego-based company, which is known as the world's leading seller of mobile phone chips, announced that Samsung Electronics, Asustek Computer, and Xiaomi, among others, will use the new chip.

"AI has been one of those where I think Google is moving fast, but we have our own technology to offer that end developer," Chris Patrick, Qualcomm's senior vice president and general manager for mobile handsets, told Reuters.

Back in 2021, the company brought on board a team of former Apple engineers to assist in designing laptop chips and to enhance AI features in Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Now this innovative technology—referred to as "Oryon"—is being integrated into Qualcomm's mobile phone chips.

Additionally, the company has revamped components of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip to better support tasks like generating images and text.
