On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly called for the creation of a global digital framework that would outline precise principles for the ethical use of technology.
During his speech at the introduction of the International Telecommunication Union - WTSA and India Mobile Congress, he emphasised that, like the aviation industry, which has a comprehensive framework, the digital sphere demands rules and regulations. He argued that global institutions should work together to develop rules for acceptable and undesirable practices. He stressed the ethical application of AI, focussing on security, dignity, and equity.
Regarding India's experience, he added that, as a result of the rapid deployment, 5G telecom services are now available in the majority of the country, and 6G development is underway.
The Prime Minister remarked that in the last decade, India has transformed from a mobile phone importer to an exporter and developed an optical fibre network eight times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
India's digital strategy, launched in 2014, is based on four pillars: lowering device costs, ensuring universal connectivity, delivering affordable data, and adopting a digital-first approach, he noted.
"We have utilised digital connectivity as an efficient instrument for last-mile delivery," Mr Modi claimed.
Modi added that India is willing to share its expertise in the successful development of digital public infrastructure with the international world.
