The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), launched by the Indian government in 2015, is a housing credit-linked subsidy scheme aimed at providing affordable homes for economically disadvantaged and low-income individuals.
The Union Cabinet has approved PMAY 2.0, a new phase that will extend financial assistance to 1 crore urban poor and middle-class households over the next five years, starting from September 1, 2024. This flagship initiative, part of India’s housing mission, will offer government subsidies of up to ₹2.50 lakh per unit, with a total investment of ₹10 lakh crore.
The goal of PMAY 2.0 is to address the housing needs of 1 crore families, enhancing the standard of living for citizens across the nation.
Key Features of PMAY 2.0:
- Administered through Four Verticals: PMAY 2.0 will offer various options under four verticals for beneficiaries, states, and union territories.
- Eligibility Criteria:
- Families must belong to the EWS (Economically Weaker Section), LIG (Low Income Group), or MIG (Middle Income Group) categories.
- Applicants should reside in urban areas and not own a pucca house.
- Beneficiaries who have already received housing assistance from any government program within the last 20 years are not eligible.
- Income Criteria:
- EWS: Annual income up to ₹3 lakh
- LIG: Annual income between ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh
- MIG: Annual income between ₹6 lakh and ₹9 lakh
- Preference Groups: Special preference is given to widows, single women, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, transgender individuals, and those from SC/ST communities, minorities, and other vulnerable sections.
- Focus on Specific Occupations: The scheme also pays particular attention to safai karmis, street vendors, artisans, anganwadi workers, building and construction workers, and residents of slums.
