Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on Wednesday, taking a sacred dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers at Triveni Sangam. Clad in a saffron jacket, blue track pants, and a rudraksha mala, Modi arrived at the site alongside Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
PM Modi’s visit to the Maha Kumbh drew significant attention, with authorities estimating that by noon, around 55 lakh devotees had taken the holy dip at the festival. Upon reaching Prayagraj at approximately 10 a.m., he proceeded to Arail Ghat before boarding a boat to the Sangam Nose, the precise meeting point of the three rivers. After arriving at the location, he stepped into the water alone, immersed himself in the river, and chanted Vedic mantras.
Following the ritual, the prime minister took to social media to share his experience. “Honored to be part of the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. The sacred bath at the Sangam is a moment of spiritual connection. Like millions of devotees, I too felt immense devotion and gratitude. May Maa Ganga bless all with peace, wisdom, good health, and harmony,” PM Modi posted on X.
Officials stated that during the visit, Modi performed an Arghya offering to the sun and prayed to the sacred rivers. After completing the holy bath, he participated in a puja ceremony wearing a black kurta, saffron stole, and a traditional Himachali cap. The ritual, held under the guidance of local priests, coincided with Bhishm Ashtami, an auspicious day during the Gupta Navratri period.
Priests at the event noted that Bhishm Ashtami holds significance for prayers dedicated to Goddess Durga and ancestral offerings. Sources indicated that the prime minister spent nearly two hours at the venue. Despite security arrangements, regular pilgrims continued their bathing rituals at designated ghats without interruption.
This marks Modi’s first Maha Kumbh visit since the stampede incident on January 29. Previously, he attended the event on December 13, 2024, when he inaugurated 167 development projects valued at Rs 5,500 crore for Prayagraj.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, will continue to witness a massive influx of devotees in the coming weeks, with significant spiritual and cultural events planned at various ghats along the riverbanks.
