If we talk about the bill, 'One Nation, One Election' focuses on holding simultaneous elections for both Lok Sabha and State Assemblies across the nation. In fact, for a long time, the Prime Minister has been a proponent of this concept.

At present, both elections are held separately, either after the completion of a five-year term or when a government is dissolved for various reasons. Therefore, to create a change, in September, the Union Cabinet accepted the recommendation of a high-level panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha, Assembly, and Local Bodies elections in a phased manner following a nationwide consensus-building exercise.

The other members of the Committee were Home Minister Amit Shah, former Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Chairman of 15th Finance Commission NK Singh, former Secretary General in Lok Sabha Dr Subhash C Kashyap, senior advocate Harish Salve and former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari. Also, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Law and Justice, was a Special Invitee and Dr. Niten Chandra was the Secretary of the HLC.

In fact, placing the report before the Cabinet was a part of the law ministry's 110-day agenda.

Later, the committed also recommended 18 constitutional amendments for the One Nation, One Election to become a reality.

Now is the time to wait and see how things will turn out.
