New diaphragm wall for Polavaram not needed

Vijayawada: Experts from Canada and America, who are on an inspection of Polavaram project site in Andhra Pradesh on a request by the Government of India, during their preliminary discussions reportedly stated that the diaphragm could be repaired.
The experts are yet to submit their preliminary report. They will visit the dam site periodically and recommend to the PPA on how to expedite the completion of the project.As per estimates, construction of a new wall would have cost of Rs990 crore whereas its repair could peg the cost less than half. Four experts from Canada and the US are at present camping at the project site after their arrival at Rajahmundry on Saturday evening. They held a daylong meeting in Delhi with the officials of Central Water Commission (CWC), Polavaram Project Authority and Ministry of Jal Shakti. After a visit to the dam site, CM Chandrababu Naidu said he had completed 72 per cent of construction work during his earlier stint.
