India’s Tokyo Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Asian Games silver medalist Kishore Jena are the only two Indians who will be in action at the Doha Diamond League on May 10. The entry lists for all events at the Doha Diamond League was published on Monday.
Both Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena are amidst a world-class field that includes former world champion Anderson Peters, Olympic silver medalists Jakub Vadlejch and Julius Yego.
Neeraj won the Doha Diamond League last year and this will be the 26-year-old’s first competition after winning the gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year.
Kishore, who finished second behind Neeraj at the Asian Games, will be looking to improve his performances and inch closer or even breach the coveted 90m mark, just like his compatriot.
While the Doha leg of the Diamond League will boast world-class athletes, the absence of Johannes Vetter and Max Dehning, the youngest man to hit the 90m mark, will deplete the field a bit.
Neeraj is the first Indian athlete ever to win a Diamond Trophy in 2022, and started his 2023 campaign with a stunning victory in the Qatari capital last year.
Roderick Genki Dean of Japan, Finland's Oliver Helander, Andrian Mardare of Moldova, Lithuania’s Edis Matusevicius, Anderson Peters of Grenada, Curtis Thompson of the USA, Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic and Julis Yego of Kenya, apart from Neeraj and Kishore, are in the fray at the Doha Diamond League.
Neeraj Chopra will compete in the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland before the Paris Olympics 2024.
Other Indian javelin throwers, Shivpal Singh and DP Manu, will not be competing in the Doha Diamond League.
