National Unity Day aka known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is celebrated on October 31 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Popularly known as ‘Iron Man of India’, Patel played a significant role in unifying India after its independence in 1947.
Rashtriya Ekta Diwas: An Overview
The day inspires the citizens in the country to imbibe the ideas of national unity and integrity. Initiated by the government of India in 2014, the day recognises Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s relentless efforts in playing a key role in unifying India post independence, which was divided into hundreds of princely states. The celebrations of this day are marked by various events including Run for Unity, speeches, and gatherings.
History of National Unity Day
After attaining independence in 1947, India was already reeling through severe economic downturns, majorly aggravated by poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment among many. Apart from this, India was also fragmented into 565 princely states, which in turn created operational difficulties for the newly-formed government. It was at this juncture, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel used his impeccable diplomatic skills to merge the fragmented nation into a united country, thereby setting the tone for modern India.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel: A Profile
Known as the ‘Iron Man of India’, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875. He studied law in England and became a barrister before joining the freedom movement. While being a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, Patel was instrumental in various independence movements including Quit India Movement and the Civil Disobedience Movement. In 1991, he was posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna. Notably, National Unity day 2024 marks the 149th birth anniversary of the visionary leader.
Statue of Unity
The Statue of Unity, located in Kevadia, Gujarat pays tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Inaugurated on October 31, 2018, it’s the tallest statue in the world measuring 182 metres.

Run for Unity 2024
This year the Run for Unity 2024’ was held on October 29 instead of October 31 as it coincided with the festivities of Diwali. PM Narendra Modi announced this adjustment in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast in honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary. Via his address, he encouraged citizens to participate in large numbers by not only uniting them spiritually but also instilling the idea of fitness in them. Several dignitaries including various Union Ministers and Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor attended the Run for Unity event, which thereby became a symbol of a United India.
