According to the Annual Taste Atlas Award 2023–24, Indian cuisine is at the 11th position, but the country still has a long way to go in terms of improving nutrition and health outcomes for all citizens.

Research has shown that undernourishment is a significant problem in both developed and developing nations. To emphasise the point, the Women and Child Development Ministry stated that 17% of children between the ages of 0 and 5 are underweight, 36% are stunted (too short for their age), and 6% are wasted. Thus, National Nutrition Week is observed annually to address the challenges for a brighter future.

History and Significance of Nutrition Week in India

Every year, the event is organised by the Food and Nutrition Board, which is under the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

The American Dietetic Association, which is now the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, initially commemorated the day in March 1973. However, in 1980, after gaining substantial momentum, the celebration was extended from its initial one-week duration to a month-long festival. Additionally, in an effort to combat malnutrition and promote nutrition education, the Central Indian Government later organised its own National Nutrition Week campaign in 1892.
