Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar successfully underwent knee surgery in Doha, Qatar.

The star Indian athlete injured his knee during a training session and it ended his dream of participating at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Sreeshankar consulted Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, a member of the Central Core Team of the Central Athlete Injury Management System in the Sports Authority of India (SAI), and proceeded for the surgery as per the advice of the doctor and the medical team.

Taking to social media, Murali said he was doing well after a successful surgery and was even able to walk hours after the surgical intervention. “The surgery was successful under Dr. Bruno Olory at the Aspetar Hospital, Doha. Thank you, everyone, for all your love and blessings during this tough phase. 18 hours post surgery and I am already walking,” the 25-year-old posted on Instagram with a photo of himself on the hospital bed, flashing a thumbs up sign.

He was operated on by Dr Olory, a noted French orthopaedic surgeon.

The 25-year-old athlete was in good form leading to the Olympics and confirmed his place at the quadrennial event when he breached the qualifying mark of 8.27m at the Asian Athletics Championships, recording a jump of 8.37m, just short of his personal best of 8.41m.

The long jumper, who won the silver medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games in Hangzhou, had earlier posted on social media on how his Paris Olympics dream was shattered and said, “Life writes strange scripts, and sometimes there is courage in accepting it and moving on. That's what I will do.”

Speaking about how he follows the ‘Mamba Mentality’, where he strives to be the best version of himself every time, Murali said his journey to making a comeback started the minute he injured his knee. “My journey to a comeback began the minute I injured my knee. This road is going to be long, difficult and will take a lot out of me. The good thing is, I have a lot to give. I will overcome this, because that’s what Mamba Mentality is all about,” he wrote.

Apart from the Paris Olympics 2024, Murali will also miss the Diamond League and other continental events, focusing on his recovery.
