In response to nationwide protests and outrage over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Ministry of Home Affairs has mandated that all states submit reports on their law and order situations every two hours.

This directive mandates state police forces to submit updates via mail, fax, or WhatsApp, beginning at 4 pm on August 16, 2024.

The Home Ministry aims to ensure timely communication on critical issues by monitoring these frequent reports.

A senior Home Ministry official stated that in the Kolkata rape case, several lacunae were noticed, and swift action is necessary in such crucial cases.

The official added that this step has been taken to keep a vigil on security situations in all states and Union Territories.

The case, which highlighted several serious flaws and triggered public protests over police inaction, has been transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court for further investigation.
