Every year, we gather to honor the courageous souls who sacrificed everything for our nation's independence on Martyr's Day, also known as Shaheed Diwas. This day holds a deep significance, as it marks the poignant anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination—an iconic figure leading India’s peaceful struggle for freedom.

On January 30, 1948, the sun rose on what would become a dark chapter in India's post-independence story. As the 78-year-old Mahatma made his way to a prayer meeting at Birla House in New Delhi, few could have anticipated the tragedy that awaited. Accompanied by his grandnieces, Abha and Manu, Gandhi was approached by Nathuram Godse, who, under the guise of paying his respects, unleashed three fatal shots. As Gandhi fell to the ground, his last words—“Hey Ram”—resonated throughout the nation, marking a moment that shocked not just India, but the world.

Commemorating a Legacy

Every Martyr's Day, we come together to pay homage to this great leader and the countless martyrs who have shaped our freedom. Events filled with prayer and tribute take place at Raj Ghat, Gandhiji’s memorial in New Delhi, where his ideals come to life in the hearts of those who gather to remember.

Leaders Remember

On this somber yet uplifting day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi led the tributes, honoring Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary. He expressed, “Tributes to Pujya Bapu on his Punya Tithi. His ideals motivate us to build a developed India. I also pay tributes to all those martyred for our nation and recall their service as well as sacrifices.” Other prominent leaders, like Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, also laid floral tributes at Raj Ghat, underlining the unified respect for Gandhiji’s legacy.

Day of Reflection and Resolution

Martyr's Day transcends mere mourning; it is a reminder of India's brave past and an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable sacrifices that paved our path to freedom. It urges us to renew our commitment to the values of non-violence, justice, and unity that define our nation. By remembering our martyrs, we ensure that their sacrifices continue to inspire us as we strive toward a brighter future—one that resonates with the spirit of resilience, courage, and hope.
