The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13 and is set to conclude on February 26, is projected to generate approximately 12 lakh temporary and gig jobs across various industries, according to NLB Services CEO Sachin Alug.
NLB Services, a global leader in technology and digital talent solutions, based its projections on internal analyses and industry reports.
The Uttar Pradesh government anticipates hosting over 400 million devotees during the 45-day event, which is renowned as the largest spiritual gathering globally. The event is also a significant driver of economic growth and short-term employment opportunities, Alug stated.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is creating job opportunities across several sectors, including tourism, infrastructure, security, logistics, and technology. Approximately 4.5 lakh jobs are expected to emerge in roles such as hotel staff, travel consultants, tour guides, porters, and event coordinators to accommodate the influx of visitors. Around 3 lakh positions are anticipated, including drivers, supply chain managers, and courier personnel, to support the large-scale movement of people and goods.
Temporary medical camps are providing opportunities for about 1.5 lakh freelance nurses, paramedics, and allied healthcare workers, ensuring the safety and health of attendees. Retail businesses catering to the spiritual and personal needs of pilgrims are expected to create approximately 1 lakh jobs, including sales and customer support roles. The demand for digital solutions such as virtual darshan apps, real-time event updates, and cybersecurity measures is expected to generate 2 lakh jobs for IT professionals.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is also driving economic activity in infrastructure development, event management, and horticulture. These sectors are witnessing increased demand for labor and services, contributing to both traditional and modern business growth.
Financial institutions are actively participating in the event. ICICI Bank has established a branch at the Kumbh Mela grounds in Prayagraj to provide essential banking services to pilgrims and visitors. The integration of fintech solutions is also streamlining transactions and enhancing the overall experience for attendees.
To ensure the safety and well-being of participants, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has deployed mobile food testing laboratories. These labs are monitoring food quality across the event premises.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has indicated that several high-profile dignitaries, including the President, Prime Minister, Vice President, and Home Minister, may attend the event.
The event has also faced challenges, including a recent fire caused by a cylinder explosion. Authorities have responded swiftly to ensure safety measures are in place to prevent such incidents in the future.
