Visakhapatnam: The third edition of LV Prasad Eye Institute’s Whitathon (3km, 5km, 10km) here was flagged-off by retinoblastoma survivor Vanumu Chandrasekhar and Seera Jayaram, Arjuna awardee and boxing coach. Over 350 runners participated in the run flagged off on the Beach road on Sunday.
The runners included members of the general public, Vizag Runners, members of Indian Medical Association, employees from Omega Cancer Hospital and LVPEI.
According to LVPEI, Vanumu Chandrasekhar received free treatment for retinoblastoma at their GMR Varalakshmi Campus here.
Dr Virender Sachdeva, Head of the LVPEI Visakhapatnam Campus said, “It is crucial for parents, caregivers, and the community to be aware of the common symptoms of eye cancer in children and seek timely medical attention.”
He added, “White reflex is the most common symptom of retinoblastoma. White reflex is a white or yellowish-white glow that appears in the pupil (the black part) of a child’s eye when light is shined on it, especially in photos taken with a flash. Other symptoms include poor vision, redness of eye and squint.”
