Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, has launched the AI Compute Portal in New Delhi on Thursday. The platform was created to provide startups, researchers and governments with easy access and power computing resources, including the latest Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to support AI (AI) software.

The launch was attended by Vaishnaw declared that the government was in the process of creating 27 AI data labs. He also said that applications to develop the foundation model had been accepted and are currently being evaluated.

After the approval by the IndiaAI Mission in 2024 The government has allocated Rs10,300 billion over the next five years to improve AI capabilities. The most significant aspect of this plan is the shared computing facility that includes 18693 GPUs, which makes it among the biggest AI compute infrastructures worldwide. The capacity is almost nine times the capacity of Open-source Deepfake detection tool and around 2/3 of all the computational power employed by ChatGPT.

The initial rollout provided 110,000 GPUs in India available in addition to further expansions anticipated. The infrastructure will help the creation of AI solutions that are tailored to India's diverse language and cultural diversity.

India has also launched an online GPU marketplace that will provide fair access to the most powerful computing resources. In contrast to some countries in which AI infrastructure is heavily influenced by large corporations, this initiative is designed to provide resources to a wider array of users, which includes research and startups.

To ensure a steady supply chain, the government has contracted 10 companies to supply GPUs. In addition there are plans to build an indigenous GPU in the next 3 to 5 years. This will help in which will reduce dependence on imported technology.
