Hyderabad: Indian patent office is on a granting spree and fast track mode. This year from 15 March 2023 to 14 March 2024 the patent office has granted 1,01,311 patents. This is by far the highest number of grants in a year by the Indian IP office. This is a phenomenal achievement as at this rate the Indian Patent office has granted 250 patents per day. The highest number of patents were granted in the field of Electrical and Electronics, followed by Mechanical, Chemical and Biotech Related fields.
The Year 2023 witnessed the highest number of patent filings in a calendar year with 90,300 patents being filed.
Subhajit Saha, Head - Legal & IPR of Resolute Group and Registered Patent & TM agent mentioned that the year 2023 has been the best for all IPRs with the highest number of copyrights being filed with 36,378 applications, 27,819 design applications being filed and 573 total geographical indication registered with 98 GIs getting registered alone in 2023 which is a 3X growth in the registration.
Another great achievement by the training arm of the IP office, NIPAM, has been the initiative of IP training offered to 24 lakh youth especially students and teachers in last two years covering over 7,000 institutions.
Saha, further added that the patent office will be adding many more patent examiners and with an IP friendly ecosystem being provided by the Indian IP office, India has the potential to grant five lakh patent grants per year by 2027 and compete with the top 5 patent offices of the world.
