India is gearing up for a crackdown on illegal betting and gambling apps that violate the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) norms. The move comes amidst a surge in the use of these apps, especially during events like the Indian Premier League (IPL) and general elections, despite clear regulations prohibiting such activities.

The consumer affairs ministry has urged action against indirect and surrogate advertisements promoting these illegal activities, which are in direct violation of CCPA guidelines. The ministry has called for stringent measures, including penalties and banning the operations of betting and gambling apps, to curb their proliferation.

Despite the prohibition of betting and gambling under the Public Gambling Act of 1867, online platforms continue to advertise their services, raising concerns about the financial and socio-economic impact, particularly on the youth. With India's gaming market expected to grow significantly, reaching $3.1 billion in FY23 and projected to rise to $7.5 billion by FY28, regulatory authorities are under pressure to address compliance issues and protect consumers from potential harm.

To tackle these challenges, the consumer affairs ministry has requested the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to identify violators and take appropriate legal action. Additionally, stakeholder consultations will be conducted to strengthen regulations and safeguard consumers from addiction and financial risks associated with online gaming.

Recognizing the various risks associated with online gaming, including addiction, health problems, financial loss, and privacy concerns, the government is collaborating with institutions like Bengaluru's National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) to conduct research on behavioral patterns and vulnerabilities. The findings will inform the framing of guidelines to protect consumers and ensure responsible use of technology in the gaming industry.
