Visakhapatnam: Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), a premier shipbuilding yard under the Ministry of Defence, is seeking proposals through an Expression of Interest (EoI) from qualified Indian firms, industries, and SMEs with a proven track record in integrating high-power electrical equipment and energy storage systems. The goal is to shortlist candidates as Indian Electrical System Integrators (IESI) for the integration of cutting-edge e-systems in the construction of tugs.

HSL is building several tugs under the e-Tug project. With the announcement and launch of ‘Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP)’ as part of the ‘Panch Karma Sankalp by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), a significant market space for green tugs and opportunities for shipyard have been created in India.

As the world is moving towards carbon neutrality with more countries pledging to reduce their carbon emissions to meet obligations under the Paris Accord, India has also announced its enhanced climate commitments - the “Panchamrit”, including a commitment to reach net-zero carbon emission by 2070.

In consonance with this, the Centre has decided to make the country a global hub for green shipping to claim India’s share in the market space created for green vessels by nurturing green vessel technology and becoming globally competitive. Towards realising this, a HSL official said the shipyard has made a strong pitch by evolving a family of e-Tugs of capacity ranging from 40-80 tonnes bollard pull and showcasing them in the recently concluded Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) held in Mumbai. With several prospective customers showing keen interest, HSL signed MoUs with Adani Harbour Services and Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) for collaboration in the area of construction of e-Tugs during the GMIS.In addition, HSL is actively engaging other ports and tug operators who have shown interest in e-tugs.

The selected IESI is expected to have a long term partnership with HSL for not only the e-tug project of HSL but the much broader e-Vessel program of HSL.

The invitation for EoI can be accessed at HSL website www.hslvizag.in for the details and modalities for shortlisting of firms, the official informed.
