"Government in Discussions to Phase Out Petrol and Diesel Vehicles in Delhi-NCR: Report"
"While dates are yet to be finalized, initial restrictions and Transition to cleaner fuel vehicles may first take effect in Delhi, followed by five adjoining districts, and later extend to the remaining areas."
The centre can be planning to address the Air pollution control measures of the National Capital Region (NCR) by Phase-out of petrol vehicles and diesel vehicles to battery Electric vehicles adoption in India (EVs), hybrids, or CNG variants.
Talks on the issue like Environmental impact of vehicles are on at the topmost level in the central government with discussions being taken with various stakeholder ministries in addition to auto companies, reports an Economic Times story.
Although the cut-off dates are yet to be decided, the initial Government policies on vehicle emissions are expected to come into force in Delhi, followed by five surrounding districts such as Gurugram, Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad, and lastly the rest of the NCR districts, the report added.
The timeline when new vehicles and two-wheelers are restricted to use only cleaner fuels can be set between 2030 and 2035, as per the report, although some of the restrictions can gradually begin by this fiscal year itself.
This is because cars for personal use and their two-wheelers will largely be among the last objects to switch from commercial vehicles to another source of supply.
It has only been estimated that by the year 2025, Delhi will be able to declare that new buses operated exclusively on cleaner fuels can be registered.
The timeline for three-wheeler goods and light goods vehicles, however, can extend till early 2026 to 2027.
Commercial taxis, in the meantime, could be given additional time to switch.
The government also intends to exclude all goods vehicles operating on lower than BS VI Emission standards in India from entering Delhi which might take effect within a year, as per the report.
