In Kallakurichi district, Tamil Nadu, a tragic incident has claimed the lives of 34 people and left over 60 hospitalized after consuming illicit liquor, officials confirmed on Thursday.
District Collector M S Prasanth revealed that the victims had consumed 'packet arrack,' a type of adulterated liquor, on June 18 in Karunapuram.
Shortly after drinking it, many individuals experienced severe symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, and eye irritation, prompting urgent medical attention.
Currently, 109 people are undergoing treatment across several hospitals, with medical teams closely monitoring those in critical condition.
Additional personnel and specialists from nearby government medical colleges have been mobilized to manage the influx of patients.
Furthermore, more ambulances equipped with life-support systems have been deployed in the district to ensure swift medical aid.
The death toll from the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy has tragically risen to 34, with 25 more people succumbing after consuming the spurious liquor in Karunapuram.
Among the victims were two women and one person who identified as transgender. Most of them passed away during the night of June 19.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin chaired a meeting in Chennai on Thursday morning to address the situation.
Health Minister Subramanian, who visited Kallakurichi district, provided an update on the ground realities.
In response to the incident, the Chief Minister announced financial support, offering ₹10 lakh to the families of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for those currently receiving treatment.
The state government continues to investigate the incident and provide necessary support to the affected families and communities in Kallakurichi district.
