Family Feud: Jagan Reddy and YS Sharmila Reddy Battle Over Hundreds of Crore
A bitter dispute has emerged between Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and his sister, YS Sharmila Reddy, over an inheritance worth crores, including shares (worth roughly ₹19,000 each) in Saraswati Power and other enterprises, as well as 20 acres of land in Yelahanka, a Bengaluru suburb.
With both sides engaging in a word war while accusing each other of their wrongdoing, the family feud has taken an ugly turn.
Key point of the controversy
Saraswati Power Limited, which was formed by their late father, YS Rajasekhar Reddy, is at the centre of the controversy. Sharmila believes that the company's shares should be shared equally among the four grandkids, but Jagan opposes this, stating that he has already given her enough properties and funds.
Before the sibling's dirty laundry headline, Jagan wrote a letter to her sister in August saying, "Out of the sheer love and affection, I always bore towards you as my sister, I had also expressed my intention that, unrelated to any consideration and purely out of love and affection, I intended to effect the transfer of certain properties to you at a future point of time. This was in addition to the amount of approximately Rs. 200 crores already given to you directly or through our mother over the last decade or so. This too was given by me out of my sheer love and affection for you."
In response, Sharmila wrote that Mr Reddy was not acting in accordance with the will of their late father to distribute the property equally among all four of his grandchildren.
She also criticised Mr Reddy's meddling in her political career, calling it "absurd" for him to suggest she sign a clause banning her from speaking out against him or their cousin Avinash on public platforms.
However, the dispute between the siblings has now reached the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), with Jagan accusing his sister of "illegally" transferring shares.
