Following public outrage over the death of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old chartered accountant at Ernst & Young (EY), her father, Sibi Joseph, revealed new details about the incident.

He noted that Anna often worked late hours despite family advice to leave, believing it would enhance her professional experience.

Despite raising concerns about excessive work pressure with senior officials at EY, no action was taken.

The family does not plan to pursue legal action but hopes to prevent similar situations for newcomers in corporate environments.

In response to Anna's death, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor proposed a 40-hour workweek, highlighting the grueling conditions she faced, including 14-hour days and seven-day weeks.

Tharoor intends to advocate for legislation enforcing an eight-hour workday, emphasising the need to eliminate inhumane workplace practices. Anna, who worked at EY's Pune office for just four months, died of cardiac arrest in July.

Her mother, Anita Augustine, shared her concerns with EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani regarding the company's culture of overwork and highlighted the absence of EY representatives at Anna's funeral, which the family found deeply hurtful.

In response, EY issued a statement expressing sadness over her passing and confirmed ongoing communication with the family.

Memani acknowledged the situation on LinkedIn, stressing the need for a more supportive workplace.
