Ekadashi 2024: Devuthani Ekadashi Date, Significance, and Rituals Explained

Devuthani Ekadashi, the second Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month, holds great reverence as it marks Lord Vishnu’s awakening from his four-month divine rest. This year, Ekadashi spans two days, leading to uncertainty on whether it falls on November 11 or 12.

Ekadashi 2024: Date and Time

According to the Panchang, Devuthani Ekadashi begins on November 11 at 6:46 pm and ends on November 12 at 4:04 pm. Observers will fast on November 12, with Parana (breaking the fast) scheduled on November 13 between 6:42 am and 8:51 am.

Significance of Devuthani Ekadashi

During the four-month period of 'Dev Shayan' (Lord’s rest), auspicious events like marriages are paused, resuming after his awakening, also known as Dev Jagran. Observing a fast and listening to the Vrat Katha on this day is believed to bestow blessings and spiritual growth.

Rituals of Devuthani Ekadashi

Devotees observing this day follow specific rituals, including fasting with only water or light liquids while abstaining from rice, salt, and tamasic foods like onions, garlic, and stale food. The day starts with a pre-sunrise bath, followed by preparing a sugarcane pavilion for a Lord Vishnu idol, offerings of sugarcane, water chestnuts, yellow fruits, and sweets, and lighting a ghee lamp that burns through the night. Devotees deepen their spiritual connection by reciting the Vishnu Purana and listening to the Vrat Katha.
