Mission Statement:

  • Efforts in Hyd show strong commitment
  • Use and throw to mindful consumption
  • Become “Pro-Planet People”
  • 80% India’s villages and cities environmental friendly ’28

Hyderabad: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is spearheading the national rollout of Mission LiFE, urging southern State governments to champion the new climate economy to promote long-term economic growth in their respective States and inspire individuals to contribute to India’s climate goals, fostering a win-win scenario for both the public and the nation.

Milind Deora, secretary of BEE under the Ministry of Power, highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s introduction of Mission LiFE, which aims to reshape the environmental narrative by promoting mindful consumption and a circular economy, moving away from the current “use-and-throw” model. Mission LiFE seeks to mobilise individuals for climate-positive behavior and to create an ecosystem that reinforces and enables environmentally-friendly, self-sustainable behavior.

In view of growing water scarcity in major Indian cities and the increasing energy demand year after year, the implementation of Mission LiFE is gaining more significance in Southern States. Mission LiFE, advocating mindful consumption and environmental protection, empowers individuals to become “Pro-Planet People” and aims to mobilise one billion individuals globally and make 80 per cent of India’s villages and urban areas environmentally friendly by 2028.

A Chandrasekhar Reddy, media advisor of BEE for Southern States and Union Territories, said that BEE is planning to continue its efforts in major cities of Telangana as well as in major towns and cities in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Union Territories to drive Mission LiFE.

The ongoing efforts and forward-thinking initiatives in Telangna State, especially in Hyderabad, reflect a strong commitment to sustainable development and energy efficiency, setting a benchmark for achieving desired goals. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has prioritised major cities in the South, such as Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Vizag, and Trivandrum, in its phased rollout of Mission LiFE. This approach addresses both rural and urban areas, aiming to improve quality of life and create a greener future.

Hyderabad, with its diverse industries and growing presence of global companies, is well-positioned to demonstrate the synergy between economic development and environmental responsibility..

Secretary Deora also appreciated the secretaries and Addl. Secretaries of energy departments in Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu for their efforts in promoting energy efficiency. BEE will continue its support to these States in improving energy efficiency across all sectors.

BEE stated that Mission LiFE proposes 75 specific actions designed to be non-disruptive to ongoing economic activities and promote long-term economic growth. For example, switching off car and scooter engines at traffic lights and railway crossings can save up to 22.5 billion kWh of energy, using a cloth bag instead of a plastic bag while shopping can save up to 375 million tonnes of solid waste from entering landfills.

Composting waste food at home can save up to 15 billion tonnes of food from going to landfills, turning off running taps when not in active use can save up to 9 trillion litres of water, and discarding non-functioning gadgets in the nearest e-recycling unit can recycle up to 0.75 million tonnes of e-waste.
