India news today: An earthquake of 5.1 magnitude earthquake was felt in on the Bay of Bengal early on Tuesday in accordance with the National Center for Seismology. The earthquake occurred at 06:10 am IST at an altitude of 91 kilometers and its epicentre was located in the latitude of 19.52degN as well as longitude 88.55degE.

According to NCS the earth quake took place at 6:10 a.m. at an estimated depth of 91 km.

The India Meteorological Department official told the news agency PTI that the earthquake was detected close to Puri within Odisha. The quake took place at an altitude of 91 kilometers within the Bay of Bengal, the official claimed.

The tremor was observed at the latitude of 19.52 N and longitude 88.55 E He added.

While the earthquake's tremors triggered moments of panic among residents of Kolkata there were there are no immediate reports of casualties or damages have been reported.

"EQ of M: 5.1, On: 25/02/2025 06:10:25 IST, Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, Depth: 91 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal," the NCS announced on the X.

Kolkata lies within Seismic Zone III, meaning there is the possibility for moderate earthquakes. While Kolkata may not be as vulnerable to major tremors like those experienced in Northeast India, Himalayas or Gujarat, earthquakes still cause frequent tremors that cause its cityscape to shake from time to time; earthquakes usually originate nearby regions such as Bay of Bengal Nepal North East India etc rather than directly underneath Kolkata itself.
