Airport officials reported that Terminal-1 at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport restarted full operations on Tuesday after a nine-month closure. A canopy collapse during heavy rains last June caused the terminal to close.

With the reopening of Terminal 1, all 270–280 daily T2 flights currently operating from Terminal 2—mainly by Akasa Air and IndiGo—will be shifted to Terminal 1. Delhi International Airport Limited expects the renovation project at Terminal-2 to last between three and four months.

The airline's operations will be limited to Terminals T1 and T3 at IGI Airport. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened T1 in March 2024. A canopy section at the terminal pick-up-and-drop lane collapsed outside on June 28 resulting in a cab driver's death and eight people sustaining injuries.

The DIAL announced today that gates 1 through 4 will open next Tuesday which will signal the complete reopening of the terminal.

The DELHI IGI T1 REOPENING new terminal combines both arrival and departure operations under a single unified roof structure instead of the former separate T1D and T1C terminals.

New features at the terminal include facial recognition (DIGIYATRA) technology at entry points alongside 108 CUSS self-service check-in kiosks, 10 baggage reclaim belts each measuring 70 metres and enhanced baggage handling capabilities that process up to 6,000 bags per hour which represents an increase from the prior capacity of 3,240 bags per hour.

The terminal offers various passenger-friendly features including larger shopping and dining spaces along with quiet zones yoga space prayer rooms group seating options with charging ports smart washrooms self-medication rooms and baby care facilities.

The terminal features an eco-friendly design which integrates extensive use of natural lighting. The upgraded Delhi Airport has become India’s pioneer in managing annual passenger volumes exceeding 100 million. Terminal 1 functions at a 40 million passenger per year capacity while T2 offers space for 15 million and T3 operates at up to 45 million.
