Chennai is set to upgrade its suburban rail network with the introduction of air-conditioned (AC) train coaches, offering commuters a more comfortable travel experience.
The first AC train is expected to be operational within a month, starting from Thiruttani. A 12-car AC rake, manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), is scheduled for delivery shortly, according to officials from the Chennai Division of Southern Railway.
The suburban railway network in Chennai connects various parts of the city to neighboring districts such as Chengalpattu and Arakkonam. Divisional Railway Manager Vishwanath Eerya confirmed that the AC rake would likely arrive by January. He also added that the addition of AC coaches addresses a long-standing demand from passengers who seek relief from overcrowded and humid travel conditions.
Chennai’s suburban railway system spans four major routes, excluding the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) line. The AC coaches will be introduced on routes including Beach-Chengalpattu via Tambaram, Moore Market Complex-Avadi, and Arakkonam-Gummidipoondi. Passengers traveling on these lines can expect a more comfortable commute with climate-controlled coaches.
Southern Railway officials are currently finalizing the fare structure for these new services. The pricing for AC suburban trains is expected to differ significantly from the non-AC first-class fares, which are currently five times higher than standard tickets.
The introduction of AC suburban services in Chennai comes years after Mumbai launched India’s first AC local trains in 2017. Mumbai currently operates the highest number of AC suburban train services in the country.
Inspired by Mumbai’s success, Chennai’s railway division has pushed for the inclusion of AC coaches, with plans to secure an additional 12-car rake by March 2025.
