Chinese FM Suggests Stronger India-China Ties

China and India are making tremendous progress in strengthening their diplomatic relationship as leaders on both sides are stressing on the need to cooperate. According to a Global Times report, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated, “China has always believed that being mutually supportive partners and achieving the 'Dragon and Elephant Dance' is the only correct choice for both sides.”
In the last one year, relations between New Delhi and Beijing have improved tremendously. A key moment that will stay in history is the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the latter held talks over improving the ties. “China-India relations have made positive strides over the past year,” Wang said.
Resolution to military standoff
Amid a prolonged military standoff between India and China, a breakthrough came last year when both agreed to withdraw troops from Depsang and Demchok, the last two points of friction in the region, thereby ending a four-year dispute.
Future
Wang noted China and India as the world’s largest neighbours. Moreover, leading developing economies should contribute towards other’s success. “There is every reason for us to support each other rather than undermine each other or undercut each other,” he stated,
He said, “As important members of the Global South, we have the responsibility to take the lead in opposing hegemonism and power politics.”
He stressed that both the countries could strengthen the Global South’s influence and push for greater democratisation in international affairs. “If China and India join hands, the prospect of greater democracy in international affairs and the stronger Global South will improve greatly,” he said.
75 Years of Diplomatic Relations
2025 commemorates the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and China. Wang stated that Beijing is ready to collaborate to open up new possibilities for future engagement. He said, “China stands ready to work with India to sum up past experience and forge a fast forward and advance China-India relations on the track of sound and stable development.”
Though there are challenges, recent diplomatic engagements signal towards a more progressive approach. Both the nations appear committed to dialogue where they coexist as strong, cooperative partners.
