Chennai and the surrounding areas saw severe overnight rainfall, and the India Meteorological Department announced on Tuesday that the low-pressure area is expected to become more defined soon. Civic authorities said that there is no water stagnation in subways due to preventive maintenance, although waterlogging was recorded in several spots, creating discomfort to road users.
Since Monday night, Chennai and its surrounding areas, including parts of the neighbouring Tiruvallur district, have experienced occasional rain.
In a message to X, the IMD said: "The low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal remained in the same region as of 23:30 hours IST on October 14, 2024." It is forecast to move west-northwest and form a well-defined low-pressure system over the central portions of the South Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 15th.
"Subsequently, it is expected to strengthen into a depression and persist in a west-northwest trajectory towards the northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjacent southern Andhra Pradesh coasts over the next two days."
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin examined the authorities' preparations and steps on Monday to face the likely situation coming from the meteorological office's projection of heavy rains.
The chief minister directed that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force be pre-deployed in disaster-prone areas.
He has directed the authorities to announce a vacation for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu districts on October 15 and advised IT businesses to allow their employees to work from home from October 15 to 18.
During the review conference, Greater Chennai Corporation officials announced that the civic body has prepared 990 pumps, 57 tractors outfitted with pump sets, and 36 mechanised boats for any eventualities. Furthermore, 46 metric tonnes of bleaching powder and phenyl were available for sanitary purposes. Depending on the situation, around 169 fully prepared relief centres will go into operation.
