CBI Raids Former RG Kar Medical College Principal in Corruption Probe

On Sunday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided the home of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, as part of a corruption investigation. The CBI is also conducting searches at 14 other locations linked to the case.
This development follows the CBI's registration of a case concerning alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College.
The investigation was prompted by the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the college on August 9.
The case, which had been under the Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the West Bengal government, was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court to ensure a thorough and unbiased inquiry.
The court's decision also addressed allegations of financial misconduct during Dr. Ghosh's tenure, following a petition by Dr. Akhtar Ali, the hospital’s deputy superintendent until 2023.
Ali's petition called for an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into claims that Ghosh was involved in illegal activities, including the misuse of unclaimed corpses, illegal sale of biomedical waste, and accepting bribes in medical tenders.
Ali also alleged that students were pressured to pay between Rs. 5 and 8 lakhs to pass exams.
Ali had previously lodged a complaint with the state vigilance commission in July 2023, but no action was taken. His plea to the court aimed to uncover and address the corruption.
The college has been under scrutiny since the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor. The primary suspect, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer for the Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10 and remains in custody.
