Bengaluru is gearing up for three dry days as authorities have temporarily halted all liquor sales in the city ahead of the Lok Sabha elections on April 26.
The liquor ban will begin from 5 pm on Wednesday, April 24, and continue until midnight on April 26. This directive comes from the Bengaluru city police department.
Additionally, there will be another liquor ban from 12 am on June 3 to 12 am on June 4 due to the vote counting process. During Bangalore Dry Day, establishments like bars, shops, restaurants, hotels, and taverns won't be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages. Restaurants and hotels, however, will still be permitted to serve food and non-alcoholic drinks, according to the order.
The Bengaluru Dry Day Notification issued by Bengaluru city police commissioner B. Dayananda, cites Section 135(c) of the Karnataka Excise Statutes and Rule-10(b) of the Government and Representation of the People Act, 1951. It declares 'Dry Days' from 24th April, 2024, at 5.00 PM to 26th April, 2024, at 12.00 midnight, and again on 3rd June, 2024, at 12.00 midnight to 4th June, 2024, at 12.00 midnight throughout Bangalore City District (except Police Commissionerate Area).
Furthermore, ahead of the voting, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC will be enforced from 6 pm on 24th April until midnight on April 26 within the Bengaluru city Commissionerate limits. This means that gatherings of more than five people, public meetings, rallies, provocative speeches, display and burning of effigies, possession of weapons, and political slogan chanting will be prohibited during this period.
