The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will start the process of appointing team India’s new head coach in a few days time. The new coach will take charge after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which is current coach Rahul Dravid’s last assignment.

Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, told the media that the association will start rolling out the process of inviting applications for the coach’s post even before the Indian team leaves for the World Cup. He added that should Rahul Dravid express interest to continue, he should re-apply. “We will call for applications in the next few days. Rahul Dravid’s tenure is coming to an end in June. If he wants to re-apply, he can,” Shah said during a media interaction.

The new head coach’s tenure starts after the T20 World Cup and runs until the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup. The support staff, like the batting coach, bowling coach, analysts, etc., will be appointed after consulting the head coach.

The BCCI secretary also dismissed any thoughts of appointing different coaches for different formats and said appointing one coach for a long term is BCCI’s plan. “We are looking for a long-term coach for three years. There is no precedent of different coaches for different formats in Indian cricket. Besides, we have a number of all-format players. Ultimately, it will be the Cricket Advisory Committee’s (CAC) call. I have to implement what they decide,” he added.

By advertising the post much in advance, the BCCI is keen to not repeat the gaffe they made late last year. The association did not advertise for hiring coaches in time and Rahul Dravid, whose actual tenure ended after the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, was convinced to coach the team until the T20 event.

Meanwhile, the CAC will also shortlist and recommend a new national selector, who will replace Salil Ankola. While the CAC gave an indication that the new member will be from the north zone, the BCCI secretary confirmed that a few interviews have already taken place and the new selector will be appointed shortly.
