Social activists want the vacant land earmarked for construction of LuLu Mall be used for public purposes by allotting it for developing park /multi-layer parking complex

Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) is scouting for IT companies, Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and others to let out premises at a cruise ship-shaped iconic building here.

The building, which is partly funded under the smart city project, is on verge of getting ready for inauguration.

A senior official of VMRDA said the building located at Siripuram will have dedicated floors for Andhra's largest ramp-based parking. It will have 11 floors with 1.90 lakh sft earmarked for parking and 1.65 lakh sft for offices and commercial activities.

Of 11 floors, five will be dedicated to a multi-layer car parking (MLCP). The construction cost is put at Rs.87.5 crore. The building surrounded several BPO companies and commercial activities in the city will have provision for parking of 450 cars and 600 two-wheelers.

Keeping in view the growing number of vehicular population, VMRDA has decided to construct more parking complexes. During weekends, an estimated one lakh people pass through RK Beach via Siripuram and nearby junctions causing heavy congestion on all the lanes leading to the beach road.

VMRDA, which had prepared its Master Plan for 2041 based on strategies for the future, both short-term and long-term, outlines its plans for transportation with adequate parking facilities, housing and environmental sustainability. After change of government in the State, some changes will be incorporated in the vision keeping in view the Swarnandhra Vision. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has already advised the planning bodies to keep the Swarnandhra Vision in mind from micro to macro level for adopting new strategies and their implementation with scope for mid-course corrections as and when required.

Social activist and former IAS officer EAS Sarma has been representing the authorities to give more emphasis on adequate parking instead of prioritising the construction of malls and shopping complexes. He also wanted the vacant land earmarked for construction of LuLu Mall be used for public purposes by allotting it for developing park /multi-layer parking complex.
