Tirupati Stampede: CM Chandrababu Naidu takes swift action, orders judicial probe
In the aftermath of a tragic stampede at Bairagipatteda that claimed six lives and injured dozens, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced decisive measures to address the incident. The stampede occurred as devotees gathered at Sri Padmavathi Municipal Park to collect Vaikunta Dwara Darshan tokens, leading to chaos and loss of life.
In a press conference, CM Naidu revealed the suspension of DSP Ramana Kumar for negligence and TTD Goshala Director Harinath Reddy for their roles in the mishap. Key officials, including SP Subba Rayudu, TTD JEO Gauthami, and TTD CVSO Sridhar, were also transferred.
A judicial inquiry has been ordered to uncover the lapses that led to the tragedy. Based on its findings, further action will be taken to ensure accountability. The Chief Minister also announced compensation for the victims’ families, with Rs 25 lakh and a contractual job for the kin of the deceased, Rs 5 lakh for those seriously injured, and Rs 2 lakh for those with minor injuries. Additionally, the 31 injured devotees will receive special darshan of Lord Venkateswara.
Naidu expressed dissatisfaction with the crowd management failures and questioned the decision to extend the Vaikunta Dwara Darshan period from two days to ten, emphasizing adherence to Agama Shastra. He criticized the ticket distribution system in Tirupati, calling it inconsistent with the temple’s traditions.
During his visit, the Chief Minister inspected the arrangements at the site, highlighted the delays in emergency response, and demanded better planning for future events. At Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), he met with the injured and assured them of the government's unwavering support.
Naidu called for political unity to uphold the sanctity of the temple and ensure such incidents are not repeated, reflecting his commitment to improving administrative preparedness and accountability.
