Visakhapatnam: In a shot in the arm to India’s endeavours to promote green energy and sustainable future, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the state-of-the-art NTPC Green Energy Limited’s Green Hydrogen Hub Project at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam in North Andhra Pradesh.

Modi, on his arrival in the City of Destiny was accorded a tumultuous welcome. Flanked by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan, a mammoth crowd greeted him during his roadshow before addressing a public meeting at the Andhra University Engineering College Grounds, amid unprecedented security.

The Prime Minister also fulfilled a long-pending demand of locals by laying the foundation stone for the headquarters of South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone at a cost of Rs149 crore for which e-tender has already been issued. He also launched 10 road construction/expansion works at an estimated cost of Rs4,593 crore, Krishnapatnam Industrial Park (Kris City), in Tirupati district envisaging an investment of Rs2,139 crore, six railway projects costing Rs6,028 crore, Bulk Drug Park near Nakkapalli in Anakapalle district costing Rs1,877 crore, seven road projects stretching over 234.28 km at a cost of Rs3,044 crore and three railway lines in Rayalaseema at an outlay of Rs5,718 crore. All the projects were launched from the meeting venue virtually.

The green energy project envisaged at a cost of Rs1.85 lakh crore is a joint venture by the newly formed NGEL, the renewable arm of power major NTPC Ltd and New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of AP (Nredcap). This is the first Green Hydrogen Hub being kick-started under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The site for the ambitious project has been allotted by the APIIC following a recent MoU between NGEL and Nredcap.

As part of the joint venture agreement, NGEL and Nredcap will develop 20GW RE projects, 1,500 TPD green hydrogen and 7,500 TPD green hydrogen derivatives (including green methanol, green urea and sustainable aviation fuel), making it one of India’s largest integrated green hydrogen production facilities.

The project is expected to provide huge employment opportunities, while at the same time contributing substantially in achieving India’s non-fossil energy capacity target of 500GW by 2030. The company has also signed a similar MoU with Government of Rajasthan for development of 25GW of renewable energy projects.
