ICAR-CIFT Launches Fish Processing Programme

Visakhapatnam: Indian Council of Agricultural Research–Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), Visakhapatnam Research Centre on Monday launched a five-day training programme titled “Enhancing the knowledge practices on fishing technology, fish processing and food safety for fishery officials.

This is the first-ever training programme of its kind, where officials from the Department of Fisheries across all the North Eastern States (NEH) have been invited to the institute for an in-depth, hands-on learning experience in harvest and post harvest fisheries. This marks a significant initiative aimed at advancing the development of the fisheries sector in the NEH region. The programme includes theory and practical sessions on Fish harvest and post-harvest operations focusing on NEH region and food safety aspects with thrust on the detection of formalin adulteration and pathogens.

At the Inaugural session onMonday, Dr. U. Sreedhar, Scientist-in Charge welcomed the participants and Dr B Madhusudana Rao, Principal Scientist presented an overview of the NEH training programme.In his address, G Pawan Kumar, national president, Seafood Exports Association of India (SEFI), suggested that there is ample scope for introducing shrimp aquaculture in the NEH States and gave examples that inland States such as Punjab and Haryana are already reaping the benefits of inland shrimp aquaculture.
