Cyclone Fengal, brewing in the Bay of Bengal, has intensified and is expected to bring heavy rains to the South Coast and Rayalaseema districts. The cyclone’s primary impact will be on Nellore and Tirupati districts, prompting authorities to issue warnings to farmers during this critical harvest period.

Cyclone Movement and Rainfall Predictions

The cyclone, moving north-northwest, strengthened further on Tuesday evening. It is projected to intensify today, November 27, and cross the Sri Lankan coast before heading toward Tamil Nadu.

Rainfall Highlights:

Wednesday, November 27: Heavy rains in parts of Nellore, Sri Sathyasai, YSR, Annamaiah, Chittoor, and Tirupati districts.

Thursday, November 28: Heavy to very heavy rains in Kakinada, Konaseema, Krishna, and coastal districts, with light to moderate rains in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and surrounding regions.

Friday, November 29: Torrential rains in Nellore, YSR, Chittoor, and Tirupati districts, with heavy rains spreading to East Godavari and Visakhapatnam.

Saturday, November 30: Heavy rains in Nellore, Anantapur, and parts of Vijayanagaram and East Godavari.

Precautions for Farmers

Officials have urged farmers to safeguard their crops and harvested grains. Measures include:

Draining excess water from fields.

Providing support for horticulture plants to prevent damage.

Storing grains in safe locations.

Fishermen are also advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to strong gusts of 50–70 km/h expected along the south coast.

Revenue Department’s Alert

RP Sisodia, Special Principal Secretary for Disaster Management, stated that the cyclone is currently located 340 km south-southeast of Trincomalee, 630 km from Nagapatnam, and 830 km from Chennai. It is traveling at 10 km/h and is expected to strengthen into a severe cyclone within the next 12 hours.

The revenue and agriculture departments have been directed to assist farmers with specific guidelines to mitigate losses.
