Srikakulam: As a Diwali gift to the poorer sections, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday launched Deepam-2 Free LPG Cylinder Scheme.

The scheme as well as the distribution of cylinders in autos was formally launched in Ichchapuran Assembly Constituency in backward Srikakulam district in the areas bordering Odisha. This was one among six promises made by Naidu in the elections, known as Super Six Guarantees.

Under the scheme, the Chief Minister said around Rs 2,684 crore will be spent annually. The cylinders will be given at the rate of one in four months per eligible family. Naidu had handed over a cheque for Rs 894 crore to the oil companies towards the cost of first cylinder. The price being given by the beneficiaries towards cost of the cylinder will be reimbursed within 48 hours by crediting it into their accounts.

The Chief Minister in a novel gesture went to the house of Shantamma in Idupuram village and helped her in preparing tea. He also savoured the team in her house, one of the beneficiaries of Deepam-2 Scheme and declared that the coalition government is firm in mitigating the sufferings of the BPL families.

He visited another woman's house and handed her over NTR Bharosa social security pension. He also directed the District Collector to sanction her a house immediately. Naidu interacted with the beneficiaries and scoffed at criticism by YSRCP that the TDP and its allies Jana Sena Party and BJP are not committed to implement the promises made in the run-up to the elections.

He blamed YSRCP government for allowing damage to diaphragm wall of Polavaram project and thanked the Centre for approving Rs 12,000-odd crore for completing first phase of the multipurpose project.

Reiterating their commitment to supply sand free of cost, he said they are credited with removing all taxes on sand. On new liquor policy, he cautioned that the government will cancel the licence if anyone found selling at more than the MRP. Under no circumstances, he said belt shops will be allowed.

Naidu said YSRCP had been meted out a crushing defeat for its 'misdeeds and corrupt' rule in the recent elections for five years after coming to power in 2019 by hoodwinking the people with false promises.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, State Civil Supplies Minister N Manohar and Agriculture Minister K Atchan Naidu and others.
